img

As the Indian Government has been taking quicker and necessary steps to curb the growing pollution in the country, the automobile market too seems to be rapidly making moves alongside. This year, Indian Government planned to skip the implementation of BS-V norms altogether and is about to leap from BS-IV to VI in next four years, i.e. stricter emission norms by 2020.

This news created sparks in the automobile industry and soon we started hearing from most automobile companies working on alternative fuels while some even planning to manufacture hybrid and electric cars for the Indian market. Now the latest to join the bandwagon is none other than the luxury car maker Mercedes Benz

Mercedes Benz India has announced plans to introduce their hybrid and electric cars to India by 2018, which is two years ahead of the time fixed by the Indian Government for implementing stricter emission norms. Roland Folger, MD and Chief executive of Mercedes Benz.India said in an interview "We can easily meet the BS-VI requirements. All we need is a year to make the changes. And we can bring in models with alternative drive trains including plug-in hybrids and full-electric vehicles from our global portfolio. We already have one of the widest ranges of such models globally”.

Merc has always been one of the leaders in the global automobile market with their wide range of vehicles. In the global platform, some of their vehicles include

C350 plug in hybrid sedan (electric+gasoline)

S 550 plug in hybrid sedan (electric+gasoline)

B Class sedan (full electric)

GLE 550e plug in hybrid SUV (electric+gasoline) and the list goes on….A few have been unveiled at the ongoing Paris Motor Show 2016.

While this news does bring few wide smiles across the car lovers, India is about to witness not only a greener India but also the toughest competition in the auto market in the coming years.
